*Most public high schools have at least one 30-hour after-school class per month.

*After school classes will be either ten or fifteen days per month, depending on the school.

*There will be no class on Wednesdays at most public high school.

*We assign students to class based on age, oldest to youngest, and availability.

*Students must register before we can assign them to a class.  Each public school will make announcements about where to pick up the registration forms and how to complete the registration process at that school.  Forms are usually located in Student Services or at the front desk at the school.  Look for a Driver Education poster near the front office, which will tell you where to get forms.

*The Lead Teacher for Driver Education at each high school assigns the students to their classroom and then to a behind-the-wheel teacher. The Lead Teacher is your contact for Driver Education at that school.   There is also a Lead Teacher for Home School classes and for Private School classes.

Contact information for Lead Teachers  - listed by school

*We must have enough students registered to hold class.  If there are not enough students, we will postpone the class until registration increases.  If all registered students do not show up for class, we reserve the right to cancel the class until sufficient numbers are available.

Parents, please read below.  It is important information.

Jordan Driving School is the driver education contractor for Wake County.

·        Driver Education is offered free of charge ONE time to each eligible student residing or attending school within Wake County.   If you fail the class, you may not take it with Jordan Driving School again.

·         You will first take the 30 hours of classroom.  Approximately 6 weeks after the class is over, a driving instructor will call you to schedule your driving class.  The behind-the-wheel phase is usually a 3 or 4 day class, 2 or 3 students per car.

·        If this is your first experience with Driver Education in Wake County, please take a moment to scroll down and read, the General Information and “Who is eligible and how it Works” before you begin looking for an appropriate class.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Each public high school has a Driver Education Lead Teacher.

·         The Lead Teacher assigns students to a classroom session at the high school by birth date and availability.

·         The Lead Teacher assigns students to a behind the wheel instructor in “class date” order, and then by age within that particular class.

·         The Lead Teacher is your contact for Driver Education at the high school.

Registering for Class

·         School year registration forms are available at each high school. You will find a general printable registration form in several places throughout the Wake County pages.  When using the general form, please write the name of the high school at which you are trying to register AND indicate the school that your student currently attends.  Click here for printable AFTER-SCHOOL Class registration form.  Do not use this form for summer classes.

·         If possible, have your student pick up a registration form at the high school.  There may be additional information specific to your school, which the Lead Teacher will incorporate into their form.  Forms are usually located in Student Services or at the front desk of the school.

·         You should submit registration forms to the Lead Teacher at the school where you are trying to register.

·         Fax “additional class” forms to 662-2628

·         We schedule Saturday Classes during the regular school year.  See Additional Classes page for specific dates. There will be Saturday classes at our Administrative Classroom (in the Garner area) and possibly at one or two of the public high schools.  If a public high school decides to hold a Saturday Session, it will be noted on the Class Schedule and on the Additional Classes page.  Saturday Class Sessions are for 5 Saturdays, 6 hours per day, and you must commit to attending all 5 Saturdays.

·         PRIVATE SCHOOLS, HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS, CHARTER SCHOOL STUDENTS may attend any after school class at a public high school if they can arrive on time.  Check the additional classes listed at the link below to see other possible options. Additional Driver Education Classes

·

·         Behind The Wheel

·         The instructor who is going to drive with you will call to set up your driving time.  You cannot set up a driving schedule until your instructor calls you.

·         You will drive after school hours during the school year, either immediately after school or in the early evening. Your instructor may also include a Saturday time.

·         Students should count on being called for behind the wheel 6 to 8 weeks after they successfully complete the class, although at different schools, and/or times of the year, it may be sooner.

·         You must commit to coming to each scheduled behind-the-wheel session.  We cannot hold the session without two students; if you cancel, the other student will not be able to drive unless your instructor can find another student to take your place.  Failure to show up for driving sessions can result in failure of the class.  Contact your Lead Teacher if you cannot contact your driving instructor

Who is Eligible – Wake County

·         Students are eligible if they attend public, private or Home School, do not have a Learner’s Permit or Driver License, and have NEVER taken Driver Education in North Carolina before.

·         The student must either attend school in Wake County or live in Wake County (a boarding school student, for example).

·         Students must be between 14 ½ to 18 years of age.  Students who are 18 years old and in high school may take Driver Education.  They must obtain their Learner’s Permit prior to doing the driving phase.

·          Wake County students who attend Middle School, private school, charter school or home school who are age eligible may sign up for an after school class at a public high school IF their schedule permits. They must be able to arrive on time each day.  These students may also register for any of the additional classes for which they are available and qualify to attend.

Wake County Public School System administers the program, although Driver Education is NOT part of the regular school curriculum.   We have assigned a Lead Teacher to each public High School to oversee the program at that school.  There is also a Lead Teacher assigned to Home Schools and various private schools. The Lead Teacher sets up the classroom  schedules, assigns students to class, and assigns students to a Behind The Wheel Instructor after they successfully complete the class.  The Lead Teacher will know which class is currently receiving their Behind-The-Wheel.

Each Lead Teacher has voice mail at the telephone number listed on the Lead Teacher Contact page. Please leave a message and they will return your call as soon as possible.  You will also find their email address under their designated school on the Class Schedule page and on the contact page.  In most cases, they are not in their office; they are out teaching in the car, in the classroom, or during the school day possibly teaching regular school classes.  It may be the next day before you receive a return phone call..

We also have a Lead Teacher assigned to the private Christian Schools and Ravenscroft, Kevin Elston, kelston@fbcweb.net. The Lead Teacher for Cary Academy and Cardinal Gibbons Private Schools is Sandy Fischer, voice mail 380-6954.  She is also the Lead Teacher for Cary High School.  Those students who attend a private school not listed on the Additional Classes page may attend any class for which they are eligible that meets their scheduling needs.  Students must be able to arrive on time each day and must be able to attend every day of the class.

Home School students may email Linda St. Clair at stclair56@hotmail.com  or contact the administrative office (919-772-4877) or jds@jordandriving.com.  Please check Additional Classes to see which class might work for you before contacting the private school’s Lead Teacher.

Except where we make note, eligible students may attend any of the classes we have scheduled - depending upon space availability.  Some of the private school classes are not open to students outside of their school.  Since the State law requires 30 hours of class be attended, you must be able to get to the class on time.  Please do not register for a class if you cannot attend every day and arrive on time.

We hope you have a pleasant and useful driver education experience.
