Parent/Teen Driver Training Manual and Video Developed by Jordan Driving School

Two years in the making, Jordan Driving School will introduce this important manual and video to Wake County Driver Education students and parents in late October – early November 2008.   Jordan Driving School will invite parents to attend the driver education classroom on the last day of every class.  Those who attend will receive the Parent/Teen Drive to Live video.  Upon completion of the six-hour behind- the-wheel phase, students and their parents will receive a copy of the Parent/Teen Behind The Wheel Training Manual.

Safety on our highways is a concern for us all.  How better can it begin than with parents collaborating with their teen to learn the skills of driving, a respect for the highway transportation system, and the importance of making the right decision.  In both the video and the book, parents get a good understanding of the skills introduced by their teen’s driver education teachers.  Parents will also become more aware of their role in helping their teen become a safe driver.

North Carolina is noted for offering one of the top public driver education programs in the nation.  However, the thirty classroom hours and six behind-the-wheel hours mandated by the State provide only a basic beginning to the lifetime task of safely driving the automobile.

Under North Carolina Graduated Driver Licensing Law, a driver under the age of eighteen must drive with a learner’s permit, accompanied by a parent or designated supervising driver, for a period of one year.  While the teen may obtain practical experience driving with a parent, this is optional.  It is possible at age sixteen for a teen to obtain a license without any driving experience beyond that obtained in Driver Education.  These two new tools are a way of encouraging parents to become very involved in this critical aspect of their teen’s life.  The Manual and Video contain practical directions for parents to help teens learn basic and more complicated maneuvers.  The book and video diagram and explain systematic lessons to help teens learn how to drive safely on our roads.  Additionally, there are contracts covering Driving Rules and Consequences, Parent-Teen Practice Driving Time, and a Log Sheet to record the dates, times, and lessons covered by the teen and their parents.  Jordan Driving School recommends that parents and teens log 50 hours of driving time prior to the teen obtaining their license.  The complex decision-making and information-processing necessary for safe driving are learned only through extensive practice and exposure to a variety of driving situations.  This new manual and video are an effort to encourage and facilitate this learning process for Wake County teens and their parents.
